Investments in GPS and RFID technology have allowed us to plan collection routes in a manner that minimises waste, unnecessary journeys and unfilled capacity. In 2009/2010, our refuse collection vehicle (RCV) fleet performed 2.4 bin lifts per kilometre travelled. Increasing this density of collections is a key operational and environmental key performance indicator.
The Resource Recovery waste management business has a significant operational impact through the extensive route collection network and road miles covered. This impact is compounded by the fact that our direct service footprint has a rural bias. This has an impact on fuel consumption and the emissions associated with the fleet
